Finasteride, a drug that blocks a form of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, could also be used to treat male pattern hair loss.
The study, led by researchers from the University of Washington, looked at a group of people with pattern hair loss who took a lower dose of finasteride. The subjects stopped taking the drug before they noticed any receding hairlines.
Finasteride, also known by the brand name Propecia, blocks the action of a form of the hormone 5-alpha reductase, which is linked to thinning hair and hair loss in men.
Finasteride was tested in more than 4,500 men with hair loss between the ages of 20 and 50 who took the drug at a dose of 1 mg daily.
It also appeared to reduce the chances of receding hairlines, but the researchers didn't find a significant difference in receding hairlines between those taking the lower-dose finasteride and those who took the higher-dose finasteride.
The findings suggest that finasteride might help lower the risk of hair loss, but researchers don't yet know whether the drug might help men with hair loss who are not at risk of receding hairlines.
Researchers at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Brigham Women's Hospital looked at data from a clinical trial involving 523 men who were treated with finasteride for hair loss over a five-year period.
